What is a Claude skill?

A Claude skill (Anthropic calls them Agent Skills) is a folder containing a SKILL.md file with a name, a description and instructions, plus optional scripts and reference files. Claude reads only the short description until your request matches it, then loads the full instructions. That keeps Claude fast while giving it expert know-how for specific jobs, like editing a Word document or testing a web app.

How do you install a Claude skill?

Where you add a skill depends on which Claude you use. Skills are added separately in each place.

  1. Claude apps (claude.ai, desktop, Cowork): download the skill folder as a zip, then upload it in Settings. Custom skills need code execution turned on and are available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Anthropic's document skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF) already work without setup.
  2. Claude Code: copy the skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ to use it everywhere, or into .claude/skills/ inside a project to share it with your team. Many collections also install as Claude Code plugins.
  3. Claude API: upload the skill with the Skills API (/v1/skills) and reference it by skill_id alongside the code execution tool.

Are community skills safe to use?

Treat a community skill like software you install. Skills can contain instructions and code that Claude runs, so a badly written or malicious skill could read files or send data somewhere unexpected. Anthropic recommends using skills from trusted sources. Before you install one, open its SKILL.md and any scripts, check what it connects to, and test it on non-sensitive files first. Skills marked Official here come from Anthropic's public repository.

How this list is built

The finder combines Anthropic's official skills repository with two widely used community lists, ComposioHQ/awesome-claude-skills and travisvn/awesome-claude-skills. Descriptions are summarised from each project, duplicates are removed, and the list is refreshed regularly. PromptPulse hasn't tested every community skill. In the Claude apps, upload the skill as a zip file in Settings with code execution turned on (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans).
